Easy World Book Day Costume

If you are anything like me and you hear the words World Book Day your stomach turns at the thought of what your kid is going to ask to go as. Let’s be honest – is any kid’s favourite character actually any of the costumes they sell in the supermarkets? No need to panic – here are my top tips for an easy World Book Day costume!

Felt

Felt is your friend when it comes to World Book Day. You can use it to decorate existing clothes to create something completely new. It doesn’t need hemmed so is perfect for sewing on to existing clothes or if you don’t mind it not washing well you can even use fabric glue. When he was 6, The Boy asked to go as really obscure character one year and felt came to rescue. I even got him involved with creating some of the outfit!

Use what you have

Men’s shirts make a great base for a for a wide variety of costumes. While shirts make great lab coats, navy ones make great police and firefighter uniforms. Just take up the sleeves for slim fit shirts and it is easy to take in the side seams of a wider fitting shirt. For the ultimately easy World Book Day costume convince your kid to go as a character that wears regular kids clothes!

Gathered skirts

A gathered skirt is one of the easiest things to make for an easy World Book Day costume. You can sew them on a machine or can even use fabric glue. The Boy discovered that girl’s costumes tend to be more fun than the boys so when he asked for a tutu to go with his Batman outfit it was a simple make to make a boy very happy! They can be made long for a witches costume or short in net fabric for a ballerina outfit. With an elasticated waist they are very comfortable as well!

Think outside the box

Our first World Book Day was in the depths of a Supertato obsession. Now – have you ever tried to get a potato coloured top for a child? They are not easy to come by. By convincing The Boy that tomato was actually the funniest character in the Supertato books I was able to make a super easy World Book Day Costume with just some felt and a hair band!
